That’s What Best Friends Are For…
I first met Hannah five years ago at our university’s Open House. We’ve changed tremendously between then and now. As we’ve grown as people and as best friends, we’ve learned to play different roles for each other.
It was Hannah’s birthday a few days back, and it got me thinking how much I truly love this girl! She finds time to be all of these things for me. When I need her to step up as my personal cheerleader, she does. When I need her to hit me with the truth, she will. Surely, all you girls play a certain role in your BFF’s life. In my case, Hannah is my…
1. Mirror. When I don’t know what I’m feeling or what I want, I tell her about it; when she throws it back at me, I somehow understand my situation better. She’s honest about everything and knows the difference between what I want to hear and what I need to hear. And, she breaks it to me softly. (Unless I’m being stubborn, which is when she’d bitch-slap me.)
2. Mind-reader. Well, not exactly. Of course communication is important, but when something’s wrong, she knows. She can read my behavior and pick up my vibes. She’s that sensitive. She remembers my preferences, pet peeves, and insecurities. Whenever I get worked up about something, it’s like she’s one step ahead of me.
3. Partner in crime. No, I’m not saying we go out and break the law every night. But, we do guilty little girl things together. We rant. We procrastinate. We pig out. (And then we complain about pigging out.) We stalk each others’ frenemies on Facebook. You’ve got to havesomeone to do these things with.
4. Fairy godmother. Hannah and I count on each other for last minute styling jobs. Sometimes she’ll call me up to say, “Hey, just found out I’ve got an event later! Don’t know what to wear. Help!” And, of course, I’ll come running with my magic wand (a.k.a. some outfit ideas). Or when I’m having an “I-look-like-crap-but-my-boyfriend-is-coming-to-see-me” moment, she’ll provide the fix.
5. Safe place. When I’m totally on edge and feel like it’s the end of the world, I go to Hannah to feel safe. Our friendship is like a no-judgement, worry-free, anti-depressant bubble. She’s my ultimate source of unlimited hugs. That’s all you really need sometimes.
6. Boredom-buster. We don’t need to be doing anything in particular. In fact, we spend most of our time doing nothing yet we have a blast anyway. And, we love laughing like there’s no tomorrow.
7. 24/7 therapist. I can always count on Hannah to be there. Sometimes “there” is online, on the other end of the phone, or at my doorstep. But she’s always there. If she can’t talk to me in person, her signature move is super looong texts. She knows what to say and the right time to say it. She’s extra thoughtful, and she makes sure she gets the point across, even if it takes her a five-part message and *some text missing*.
8. Cheerleader. If you’ve seen Aquamarine, Hannah is like those starfish earrings that whisper compliments and words of encouragement into your ears. Hannah will text me when she knows I’m worried about something. All of a sudden I’ll get a cheery message like, “Have a great day dear! You’re awesome and no one can bring you down!” or “I’m sure you look as hot as ever!”
9. The first person behind me. Whatever I want to do, she’s 100 percent supportive, and she’s got my back. She trusts that my decisions are worth defending.
10. Soul sister. (Yes, I love that song by Train.) I may not always be there for her to fulfill all these duties (which she does so well), but even when I let her down, she’s still there for me. I love that we dream together. We’re like two little girls lying side-by-side under the stars, dreaming up future plans. Although we may end up going our separate ways geographically or some other way, we’ll never really be apart.
As Cosmo.ph managing editor Trixie Reyna said in her latest blog entry, we have to take time to appreciate the good things in our lives—like our best friends. We should send them a little love every now and then.
Cosmo is definitely like having another best friend around. Sometimes, Hannah and I sit on the bed and look through issues together (or browse Cosmo.ph!). It’s a conversation starter; its a place to find useful, intriguing little facts; it’s where we feel safe to just be girls. Watch for our Cosmo Girlfriends video, coming soon! In the meantime, tell us what youlove most about your best friend.
